Bois d'arc also called hedge, bodock, bodark , Osage orange, and horse apple was used by Native Americans for bows. French explorers called the wood "bois d'arc" or wood of the bow. Later settlers found that the wood's strength and resistance to rot made it useful for a number of purposes including wagon wheels and fence posts. Today these old fence posts are prized by duck call makers due to their stability and beauty. Bois d'arc was also planted as fence rows and wind breaks, hence the name "hedge". It's tightly woven and thorny limbs were said to be "horse high and hog tight". Finally it's large green knobby fruit gives it the name "horse apple". The supply of old bois d'arc fence posts is limited so call for availability and cost. Pricing,
